Negotiation playbook
The best time to negotiate is after you have the offer. Use these tactics to maximize your comp.
Never give a number first
Let the company anchor. If pressed, say: 'I'm targeting competitive offers for Senior FE in Europe — what's the range for this role?'
Use competing offers as leverage
Even if informal: 'I'm in final stages with another company in the €130–150k range.' This re-anchors the conversation.
Negotiate total compensation
Base is just one number. Ask about: equity/RSUs, signing bonus, remote stipend, learning budget, PTO days, and vesting schedule.
Ask for the band maximum
Companies budget to the top of their band but offer the midpoint. Asking for the max leaves room to meet in the upper quarter.
Get it in writing before accepting
Verbal promises don't count. Ask for the full offer letter with base, equity, start date, and any negotiated extras before saying yes.
Time your negotiation
Negotiate after you have the offer, never during. Once they've decided to hire you, their incentive flips to closing you.
Companies expect negotiation. Only 30% of candidates do it — those who do earn 10–20% more on average.
